Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads and Rail Kevin Anderson has announced five schools in the Blue Mountains electorate will receive school zone flashing lights.
The news follows an assessment of schools with multiple busy entrances and high road safety risks.
Springwood High School, Faulconbridge Public School, Winmalee Public School, Lawson Public School and Katoomba North Public School will benefit from the NSW government’s $5 million School Zone Flashing Lights program.
The locations were selected by a risk assessment model which took into account approach speed, pedestrian numbers, traffic volumes and heavy vehicle traffic volumes, he said.
“This roll-out is on top of the NSW government’s initial roll-out which ensured all eligible schools across NSW has a least one set of flashing lights,” Mr Anderson said.
"School drop-off and pick-up times can get pretty busy with his pedestrian and vehicle movements," he said adding "we know school zone flashing lights are an effective way of warning motorists to slow down and pay extra attention."
“It’s great the government has identified the need to provide these schools with the extra level of protection they need,” Mr Anderson said.
Flashing lights are funded through the Community Road Safety Fund, where all speed and red light camera fines go towards vital road safety programs.
All eligible schools with multiple busy entrances were consulted in the process of selecting school zones for this program. School zones are enforced on government gazetted school days to ensure operation dates and times are consistent and easy to follow.
Works will commence on the program in December of this year and the rollout is due to be complete by mid 2017
