Blackheath Public School will hold its Great Billy Cart Derby on Friday, September 9.
A biannual event, the school has been a hub of fierce concentration of community effort as sponsors vie for top positions around the track. Banners representing local businesses, large and small fly the colours amidst the black and white checks.
Prizes are offered for speed and decoration, as well as sportsmanship. The event often has entire family groups assembling on the green as both support and pit crew.
George and Stephanie Vergotis of Blackheath Automotive, and Allen and Suzette Gregory of Blackheath Ray White Real Estate are this year’s joint major sponsors.
“I love the event”, said Mr Vergotis. “What a great way for the students and their families to have fun whilst raising money for such a worthy cause.”
“To see those grins on the kids’ faces in the field and know the benefit of the day goes right back into the class – it’s a key motivation in sponsoring for us,” said Ms Gregory.
