A team from Winmalee Rural Fire Brigade represented the district at the annual NSW Rural Fire Service State Championships at the weekend, doing the brigade proud.
Held in Narrabri, the Winmalee team finished the weekend with two second places and fourth overall.
Two hundred of the state's volunteer firefighters took part in the championships, competing against their fellow members in a range of challenging, real-life scenarios.
NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said scenarios ranged from simulated motor vehicle accidents, navigation and helicopter water drops, to bush, grass and structure fires.
“Firefighters were tested on leadership, teamwork, adaptation and decision making," Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.
The championships also featured the 'whose kitchen rules?' event in which NSW RFS volunteer caterers provided meals for 460 people three times a day, and a chainsaw event to showcase the abilities of specialist chainsaw operators.
