Colouring books for adults have been a world-wide phenomenon in recent years, with several achieving number one spots on the New York Times and other best seller lists.
Blue Mountains artist Lorraine Brownlee has just published her first colouring book, which contains 33 delightful, intricate, hand drawn designs based on Australian wildflowers.
Mrs Brownlee begins each design by doing accurate pencil drawings of the details of the plant. She then transforms the delicate, intricate shapes, lines and patterns to bring out their magic. By the time she does her final pen drawings, the designs “just seem to flow onto the paper, almost on their own”.
Her reasons for creating this book are simple. “I love drawing but I understand that you may not or you may feel that you can’t draw. Not everyone can create something on a blank page but everyone can experience the joy and sense of deep satisfaction that comes from colouring to create a beautiful work of art,” she said.
The designs in this high quality book are printed on thick, smooth paper, on one side only. They can be coloured with pens or pencils. The pages are perforated so they can be pulled out for framing.
Mrs Brownlee will officially launch the book at the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre, Blue Mountains National Park in Govetts Leap Road, Blackheath at 1pm on Sunday, October 2.
In conjunction with the launch, there will be an exhibition of coloured and black and white prints, which will be for sale.
The exhibition and sale will continue at the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre, 9am-4.30 pm daily, for the rest of October.
Mrs Brownlee grew up by the sea in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Both her parents were artists and she has been drawing for as long as she can remember.
She has lived in the Blue Mountains for 25 years. She and her husband Ian Brownlee operate Auspress Marketing, which supplies printed products for the tourist market, and Auspress Publishing.
