Katoomba’s sandstone cliffs rang with the sound of choral voices when the Melbourne-based Brunswick Women’s Choir visited on a tour of New South Wales last week.
The women’s choir, which was founded 25 years ago, did a pop-up concert at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, sang with students at Katoomba Public School and performed on the “Retro Rehash” show on Radio Blue Mountains 89.1, during its three-day visit.
The choir’s founder and director, Cathy Nixon, said many of the choir’s songs had a social justice message, and members enjoyed taking these to a wider NSW audience on tour.
“We get to sing to a whole range of new people and work with local community choirs who have a similar philosophy and approach,” Ms Nixon said.
“And we get to spend a whole week solidifying our relationships with this community of women.”
While staying in Katoomba, the choir travelled to nearby towns to perform with local community choirs.
In Windsor, the Brunswick Women’s Choir joined StayTuned and debut performers Women Song on stage at The Church Bar.
At Faulconbridge they performed with the Mudlarks, a local women’s choir which was founded almost 20 years ago.
And tourists visiting the Three Sisters in Katoomba were treated to an impromptu performance of the Latvian song ‘Labvakari’, with the vast national park as a backdrop.
The choir’s NSW tour began in Port Macquarie, through Newcastle, Taree and Katoomba, and ended in Sydney with a combined concert with gospel choirs Cafe of the Gate of Salvation and The Honeybees, at a fundraiser for asylum seekers.
