Sydney is set to expand its hotel offerings with two new development sites being unveiled at time when the sector is on the cusp of major growth in demand.
The opening of the International Convention Centre next month will inject a big range of events back onto Sydney and demand will rise dramatically for hotel rooms in the coming years.
The two new sites are by M&L Hospitality, the Singapore-based real estate investment group, which plans a new hotel development at 65 Sussex Street, Sydney.
The other is by the InterContinental Hotel Group which is developing a Holiday Inn Express in conjunction with the St Marys Rugby League Club.
Multiplex has been appointed to deliver the new M&L Hospitality hotel in the fourth quarter of 2017. It will be designed by architects Fitzpatrick + Partners and be a mid-scale hotel property with an 8-level tower.
The geometric facade will house 182 guest rooms including four suites, an internal courtyard, meeting space, restaurant and bar.
The regional managing director NSW at Multiplex, David Ghannoum, said Multiplex has extensive experience delivering hotels and entertainment facilities, and he was "delighted to continue to build upon our relationship with M&L Hospitality".
The second project for M&L Hospitality, Multiplex is currently completing the final phase of M&L Hospitality's $250 million redevelopment of 161 Sussex Street Sydney, which is set to be rebranded as the Hyatt Regency Sydney on December 1, 2016.
The chief executive of, M&L Hospitality.Neil Maxwell, said the group was pleased to start the construction of the new hotel property at 65 Sussex Street.
"With programme a critical consideration of the 65 Sussex Street hotel project, we look forward to continuing our good working relationship with Multiplex to deliver this unique hotel by the last quarter of 2017," Mr Maxwell said.
The IHG and St Marys Rugby League Club franchise agreement is for a 123-room, new build Holiday Inn hotel in St Marys, Greater Sydney. IHG currently has 26 hotels operating under four brands in Australia: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.
Holiday Inn Sydney St Marys, scheduled to open in late 2017 will represent a new definition of the Holiday Inn brand in Australia.
The hotel will form part of the St Mary's Rugby Leagues Club entertainment precinct, which features a variety of Food and beverage outlets including 4 restaurants and 3 bars and a bottle shop.
The head of development Australasia & Japan, IHG Matt Tripolone, said: the deal was "very important, and timely one for IHG".

He said IHG sees the Club industry as one of growth and IHG's Holiday Inn brand is well suited to its family, entertainment and sporting focus.
The chief executive of the St Marys Rugby League Club, Rod Desborough, said the Holiday Inn Sydney St Marys "will offer our valued members and their families, as well as the wider Rugby League community with an entirely new, contemporary accommodation offering".
