Weeding with a view wraps up conservation campaign

Volunteers rallied to ‘weed with a view’, the final event in the annual Great Grose Weed Walk run in partnership with Greater Sydney Local Land Services and National Parks and Wildlife NSW (NPWS). 

Greater Sydney Land Services Officer Robert Leslie said the project focused on restoration and revegetation works in the Kittyhawke and Braeside Swamps, Grose River and Katoomba Creek. 

“Greater Sydney Local Land Services has provided more than $60,000 in funding support to National Parks and the incredible volunteers who carry out this important work in such a naturally significant environmental area here in our region,” Mr Leslie said. 

“The Blue Mountains National Park is not only a much-loved part of this community, but brings some unique and spectacular conservation and economic values to Sydney as a whole. This is another great example of the excellent outcomes that can be achieved when community and government join forces. 

“Many of the volunteers have been involved in this project since it began 10 year ago and are now seeing the results including natural regeneration and improved biodiversity of the region and clean water flowing in the Grose River.” 

NPWS Ranger and project co-ordinator Vanessa Richardson said the Weeding with a View event was the last of nine events held as part of the Great Grose Week Walk since September. 

“Thousands of volunteer hours are contributed each year to this cause and this year has been no different. Volunteers have carried out weeding and various regeneration activities in Hazelbrook, Grose Valley, Wentworth Falls, Blackheath, Leura, Katoomba and more,” she said. 

“Their great work not only stops the spread of nasty weeds like Blackberry, Himalayan Honeysuckle and Vinca but also enhances the beauty of natural wonders like Govetts Leap.”

Greater Sydney Local Land Services funding support for the project is made possible through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
