Some only swam a couple of laps – others swam 200 – but the Blue Mountains community came together to support one of its own at Springwood Aquatic Centre on Sunday.
About 70 people took part in a swimathon for 15-year-old Springwood Swimming Club member Noah Cariolato who was diagnosed with cancer last September. The Glenbrook teenager was special guest on the day, shaving the heads of some of his club mates before the swimathon began about 2pm.
More than $3700 was raised on the day to add to $1360 already deposited in a special “Swim for Noah” account. Swimmers at Orange added to the tally at a meet on Friday night, taking the total to more than $6000.
Springwood Swimming Club treasurer Kellie Power said the fundraiser was about much more than financial support.
“Just to know that everyone can rally when it’s needed and show Noah that he’s not doing this on his own was lovely,” she said.
Former Springwood Swimming Club members came from Sydney and as far west as Orange to take part in the swimathon. Past club member, rising Australian swim star Matt Wilson, also lent his support.
Mrs Power said the club is very grateful to everyone who supported the event.
Noah’s father, Adolfo Cariolato, posted the family’s thanks on his Facebook page.
“Thank you for all the support, taking time out of busy schedules, the hugs, the love and warmth felt throughout the afternoon, from family, friends and the wonderful people we never met before,” he said. “We are so glad we are part of this amazing United Swimming Family, the support is absolutely overwhelming and heartwarming.”
