Work has started on the construction of a new Telstra mobile tower at Summerhayes Park, Winmalee.
Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, welcomed the development last week.
“As a long time Winmalee resident, I know exactly how bad our mobile reception has been, and this tower has been a long time coming,” Ms Templeman said.
“It’s great to see the work begin and I am pleased that Telstra has ultimately gone ahead with the tower in a location more acceptable to neighbours than the original plan.
“It is also good to learn that the tower’s design should allow for other carriers to be added, so I hope, for the sake of all customers – not just Telstra’s – that that happens.
“It’s not clear exactly what the improvement in coverage will be until it’s up and running, but I look forward to a much better reception for a lot more people.
“This upgrade should help ease some of that anxiety people have during summer and also allow the many home-based businesses and workers to spend less time walking up to the top of their street or stand on tippy toes to make a mobile call,” Ms Templeman said.
Telstra’s area general manager Tricia Wilson said Telstra recognised the importance of enhancing mobile coverage for the Winmalee community.
“We are delighted construction of the site is now underway, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this site a reality,” Ms Wilson said.
Ms Wilson said construction of the site should be completed within the next two months.
