Not every film club is supported by iconic film critic, TV presenter and author David Stratton - but then, the Katoomba Film Society isn’t your average film club.
Mr Stratton, who personally screened British film The Day The Earth Caught Fire for the film society in December 2014, declared himself “delighted” with the group - and he’s clearly not the only one.
One of the most vital and active community film clubs in the country, the Katoomba Film Society - a project of the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre - has been running for more than five years and has screened more than 200 films in that time.
But the group needs funds to continue its work. Enter stage left the ‘Katoomba Film Society Trivia Night Fundraiser’, which will be held from 6.30pm-9.30pm this Saturday, January 28 at Katoomba’s Paragon Cafe.
An evening of movie trivia, prizes and entertainment, the event will be MC-ed by local drag identity Quiche Lorraine and feature a drag show by the Megalong Marys.
Katoomba Film Society co-ordinator Korey Gunnis said the night would be a great opportunity for people to have fun while doing something good for the community.
“The Katoomba Film Society provides a friendly, inclusive and low-cost entertainment option for people in and around Katoomba,” said Mr Gunnis.
“It’s just as much about community building as it is about the films.
“The trivia night will be a great way for members of the public to support our work, while also having a fun night out,” he said.
The evening’s MC, Quiche Lorraine, said patrons could expect “a fabulous night” in the glamorous art deco surrounds of the Paragon.
“I’ve got some really good movie trivia questions to challenge film buffs - and some amazing prizes to hand out to the winners,” she promised.
“But don’t worry if trivia isn’t your strong point - we’ll also have raffles and other prizes, and there’ll be lots to keep you entertained including a drag show by the Blue Mountains’ own Megalong Marys. Not to mention a great range of food, drinks and wine available to purchase.”
Tickets to the trivia night are $25 per table (maximum of five people per table) or just $5 for individual bookings. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre during business hours on 4782 1117.
The Katoomba Film Society screens classic films at the Paragon Cafe on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, as well as sci-fi and cult films on the third Friday of each month.
Annual membership to the society is just $30 ($15 concession) per calendar year. Membership can taken out at the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre or at the door at any Katoomba Film Society event.
