An exhibition featuring Australian and international maritime paintings, including watercolours, oil paintings, original prints and photographs, is showing at Day Fine Art gallery in Blackheath.
The earliest artwork in the exhibition features an American ship off the Coast of Malaga, Spain in 1828. Other maritime scenes included are from Italy, Britain and Australia.
One of the most interesting artworks in the exhibition is by John Downs Castle, featuring a rare watercolour depicting steam ship SS Salamis, circa 1900.
A contingent of Australian troops departed Sydney on August 8, 1900 aboard the steam ship Salamis to provide support for the British during the Boxer Rebellion in China.
A number of colonial nations sent troops to China during this time.
John Allcott who is considered one of Australia’s greatest maritime painters is also featured in the exhibition.
A fine selection of more then 15 historical maritime scenes from around the world can be viewed in the exhibition, which is showing until February 28 at Day Fine Art, 27-29 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath.
