Almost 200 people attended the grand opening of the newly established Springwood Community Garden on Saturday, February 18.
Well-known host from ABC1’s Gardening Australia and Play School, Costa Georgiadis, was caught in a severe hailstorm on his way to officially open the garden - arriving after many had fled the downpour.
But those who stayed weren’t disappointed as Mr Georgiadis spoke about the power of a community garden to heal and to transform communities.
He posted a 27-minute personal tour of the garden on his Facebook page after the event, pledging to return to support the inspiring project.
Earlier in the afternoon the large crowd checked out the garden while being entertained by the popular Blue Mugs ukulele group and haunting harmonies of Ecopella singers.
Uncle Graham Cooper provided an enthusiastic ‘Welcome to Country’ and generous donors were duly thanked.
Weekly working bees are held every Saturday at 4pm and Wednesdays at 9.30am as well as monthly ‘Crop Swappers’ events every second Saturday at 9.30am.
The community garden is situated at 168 Hawkesbury Road.
Committee meetings, which are open to members of the public, are held from 6.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month at the office of CatholicCare Springwood Drop-In Centre, 168 Macquarie Road.
