Meeting space may be made available at Blue Mountains council offices for Katoomba RSL Sub-branch board meetings in the wake of the Katoomba RSL fire.
A mayoral minute was moved at Tuesday’s council meeting to investigate a meeting space and seek federal government support for the rebuild.
“This is just a start in the first gesture in a pathway that we walk together,” said mayor Mark Greenhill.
“It [the fire] has had a significant impact on the community. There are the jobs and there are the veterans and those people that go to the club everyday because they are lonely and for the companionship.
“I’m proud of the staff and the management of the club. Due to your actions no-one was injured seriously.
“Irreplaceable memorabilia displays were destroyed in the fire. This is a price that can never be accounted for.”
Cr Chris Van der Kley agreed. “It’s an iconic building that we have to ensure gets rebuilt in Katoomba.”
Cr Kevin Schreiber suggested a working party be established between the council and the club to assist wherever possible. This was to be discussed at the next council meeting.
The club was savaged by fire on February 24, believed to have started with an electrical problem in the roof.
