Hundreds of Sydney home owners will be out inspecting damage to their properties on Thursday with rain and even a possible storm hindering the clean-up.
Some 1700 homes were still without power on Thursday morning, down from some 33,000 houses and businesses at the peak of Wednesday's storm, Endeavour Energy said.
Ausgrid, meanwhile, was working to restore electricity to about 170 homes on the Central Coast.
Those without electricity in Sydney are mostly in the Penrith, Hills and Mt Druitt areas, which were also among the suburbs with the most call-outs for the State Emergency Service.
"We are expecting some further storms this afternoon," Phil Campbell, an SES spokesman, said.
Warmer day-time temperatures and potentially drier days should arrive by Sunday, and last for a few days into the coming week.
"Those storms shouldn't be severe in Sydney but we might see some severe storms in inland NSW," he said, with Wagga Wagga, Dubbo and Tamworth among the possible targets.
Wednesday's storms brought down trees on homes and blocked streets, in contrast to the previous day's tempest which mainly dumped heavy rain over the city.
"We’ve gone from buckets to chainsaws in the space of a day," Mr Campbell said.
Wednesday's SES work included four flood rescues, including a teenage boy from a storm drain.
"It certainly highlights the risks of kids hanging around storm water drains given the tragedy in Wollongong last week," Mr Campbell said, referring to an 11 year-old boy who drowned.
A car containing three dogs that was also hit by a fallen tree.
"The dogs were rescued out of the car and were all fine."
Tom Hough, a meteorologist from Weatherzone, said there was a slight chance of showers in the morning in Sydney, but the showers were likely to become persistent from about 1pm, and possibly become heavy at times.
"We're in for another wet and grey day," Mr Hough said. "And we'll have showers for a good few days."
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Sydney can expect 10-20 millimetres of rain on Thursday, with 3-6 millimetres more on Friday and 6-15 millimetres on Saturday.
The arrival of the cool change that provided an extra lift to Wednesday's storms has knocked temperatures down a lot from yesterday's top of 32 degrees.
Warmer day-time temperatures and potentially drier days should arrive by Sunday, and last for a few days into the coming week.
