What does it take to be a writer?
Blue Mountains library and Varuna, The Writers’ House pose this question for a special Sydney Writers’ Festival event on Saturday, May 27, at Katoomba Library from 10am to 1pm.
Designed for keen readers and aspiring writers, the event will showcase four exciting and award-winning Australian authors who are prepared to tell all about the highs and lows, and the laughs and heartaches of becoming published.
This annual Mountains Writers Festival event has become an essential for book and library lovers.
This year’s library-Varuna collaboration is the second time the two organisations have come together to bring locals a significant literary event which provides a unique opportunity to hear writers talk about their craft and will offer a chance to question them about their journey.
There are four featured writers this year: Malcolm Knox, Lisa Chaplin, Craig Cormick and Catherine Cole.
Knox’s three eclectic and interwoven careers span journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald, sportsman and fiction author of the acclaimed novels The Wonder Lover and Summerland.
Chaplin’s eccentric writing journey commenced in nursing, progressed to Harlequin novels – “for the editing discipline”, she said – and finally to an acclaimed work of historical fiction, The Tide Watchers. She now has other works in the pipeline.
Prolific author and science journalist Cormick is a writer whose work includes fiction, non-fiction, books for adults and children, books on science, novellas and short stories.
Finally, Cole has published widely including novels, memoir, poetry and short stories including crime novels Dry Dock and Skin Deep.
Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “This joint partnership between the library and Varuna to present this event is a wonderful opportunity for the people of the Blue Mountains to hear about the writers’ journey towards becoming a published author.”
Tickets for Writers’ Journeys which include fabulous refreshments from the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre café, are $20 each.
They are available online at the Blue Mountains library website or from any Blue Mountains library branch.
