The Leura Village Association (LVA) has been given a grant of $120,000 to install 17 CCTV cameras in the Mall and nearby areas.
Vice-president of the LVA, Piercarlo Cuneo, welcomed the news.
“I am very pleased. And I think the members [of the LVA] in the shops along the mall and surrounding areas will probably be happy.
“It’s a quiet place but now and then we have some vandalism,” he said. The cameras should ensure that Leura does remain “quiet”.
The Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, said the cameras will be installed along the Mall and adjacent lanes and streets “where there is the most pedestrian and vehicle traffic, to monitor and prevent crime and deter antisocial behaviour”.
“As we all know, CCTV and security infrastructure has been a pivotal factor in both solving crimes and preventing crimes,” she said.
The grant is part of a federal government safer communities fund, which gives money to local councils and community organisations to boost crime prevention initiatives through the installation of fixed and mobile CCTV or lighting.
Justice Minister, Michael Keenan, said: We recognise that the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it from happening.”
Katoomba, Springwood and Wentworth Falls all have CCTV cameras installed in their town centres.
Macquarie MP, Susan Templeman, welcomed news that the promised funding would be delivered.
