Matt Herne’s day job as a Springwood High School music teacher has kept him occupied for the past seven years.
But beyond the school grounds the 32-year-old can be found preparing for performances on stage. His latest endeavour is playing the key role of Pontius Pilate in Blue Mountains Musical Society’s upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Under the direction of Jessica Lovelace, Herne will bring the people-pleasing, yet ultimately villainous Pilate to life. He revels in the challenge of portraying a character with personality traits starkly different to his own, with Pilate neglecting his morality in his quest for approval.
“In another time, another place, another position, perhaps he wouldn’t have taken the same actions. He’s bewildered by the mobs calling for justice, and quite possibly would view himself as a good guy,” said Herne.

He describes the post-apocalyptic, rock musical as “at times dramatic, at times exuberant and at times melancholy”.
“Musically, it’s rare to find a show that can have you in goosebumps one moment and wanting to dance the next.”
Pilate isn’t Herne’s first role with Blue Mountains Musical Society. He played the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in 2015 and was also the musical director of last year’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
“I love that community musical theatre is about more than the individual… Every single person has a very specific role and, without them, the show just wouldn’t function.”
The supreme talent of the Jesus Christ Superstar cast and crew brings joy to the rehearsal process.
“I’m enjoying the camaraderie, the challenge, and the growth that inevitably comes from working alongside such talented individuals. The production team has a very clear vision and I’m enjoying being a part of the realisation of that vision.”
Herne’s performance credits extend beyond the society. One of his career highlights was performing in the Ultimate Rock Symphony in Sydney with Roger Daltrey, Alice Cooper and Jimmy Barnes. He was also a contestant in season four of The Voice.
Jesus Christ Superstar is at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub May 20-June 4. Tickets at www.bmms.org.au or 4723 5050.
