Over the past three months Mountains commuters had the chance to witness a little bit of Logies fashion magic.
Glenbrook fashion designer Daniel Learmont has regularly used his commute into his Darlinghurst studio to do some small sewing and cutting on the “jetset couture” gowns of four recent TV Week Logies winners from A Place To Call Home.
”I did get some very inquiring looks [on the train],” he said.
Mr Learmont dressed the female stars from the Foxtel network show for the red carpet – acting stalwart Noni Hazlehurst, as well as Sara Wiseman and Jenni Baird, after initially being recruited by Arianwen Lockwood-Parker. He then watched as the stars went on to win Most Outstanding Drama Series.
“I’ve always been a fan of the show. It was a surreal experience [to be part of the Logies]. I was gunning for it [to win]. They [the actors] were genuinely surprised, it was the show’s first ever Logie.”
Mr Learmont moved to the Mountains two years ago with his partner. It’s where he still regularly uses his Mum’s sewing machine, a Bernina, that he first learnt to sew on.
He said his earliest influence was his grandmother “who was constantly busying herself with some kind of sewing or craft project”. Her handmade garments and copies of the Australian Women’s Weekly made a lasting impression leading to his current couture and bridal work.
“I loved that section in the middle with all the best dressed people.”
Mr Learmont had one dress in last year’s Logies and said they the gowns were a “labour of love, you don’t count the time … you are creating something beautiful”. His specialty is weddings but he hopes to dress more stars in coming Logies.
“It was a great experience and a nice opportunity for a change from working in white and ivory.”
