The release of balloons could soon be banned on council-managed land in the Blue Mountains.
Councillors in the Blue Mountains will vote on a balloon ban later this year when they are considering a draft local approvals policy.
Helium balloons would be banned at events such as religious ceremonies and musical or theatrical events on community land.
“If endorsed it would not stop the use of balloons at informal gatherings such as children's birthday parties at local parks, as informal gathering such as this are not required to comply with the local approvals policy,” said a Blue Mountains City Council spokeswoman.
Eurobodalla Shire Council banned the release of balloons earlier this year due to the effect they have on the environment. Many NSW councils have followed suit, with Lithgow City Council the latest to adopt the ban in April.
“Council acknowledges the damage the release of balloons can cause the environment, although recent investigations have found the practice is not widespread in the Blue Mountains,” said the Blue Mountains council spokeswoman.
