Leura teenager Trevor Zadro-Jones is looking forward to spring. But winter, on the other hand – not so much.
The 14-year-old will undergo chest reconstruction surgery on June 20 after developing a condition called pectus excavatum. His chest has become concave, limiting the space needed for his vital organs. Without surgery the condition is likely to worsen over time.
The four-to-eight hour procedure involves inserting two metal bars through Trevor’s ribs behind his sternum. These bars are then flipped during surgery, to 'pop' his chest out and away from his organs. The procedure and recovery are painful, and it will be many months before Trevor can move his torso, lift or carry any weight. In two to three years the bars will be surgically removed, leaving his newly molded bones in place .
Trevor’s friends have organised a Lawson event to give his pectus excavatum “a brilliant send-off” and to raise much-needed funds for the family to help with the costs of the procedure and recovery.
The event will feature non-stop entertainment provided by more than 10 bands and a professional magician, CJ Winter.
As well as a 10-quid store and vintage treasures, children will love the Kids Corridor (including face painting, lucky-dips, origami and vintage activities). Delicious food will be available throughout the day. A spare-change exchange will relieve visitors of their small change (bring along gold and silver coins).
Everybody is welcome at Clever Trevor’s Vintage Chest Raiser - vintage costumes are definitely welcome, and put on your dancing shoes – the rock and roll dance band will be among the bands after 5pm.
The event is being auspiced by the Mid-Mountains Community Centre, New Street Lawson, where it is being held from 4-8pm on Saturday, June 10. Twenty per cent of the proceeds will go to the Rowen Wkeng Appeal to help the New Guinean nursing student studying in Australia.
