The Katoomba art scene is set to grow, with a new gallery dedicated to craft and design now open in the heart of Katoomba Street.
Platform Gallery is founded by former BMEE Creative Industries Cluster Manager, Kelly Heylen.
“The Blue Mountains is home to so many talented makers, designers and artisans, and this is really at odds with what I was seeing in local galleries,” said Ms Heylen. “I decided to create a new gallery and retail space that honours the type of art that rarely gets shown in galleries.
“Platform Gallery’s starting philosophy is ‘no paintings’. I of course love paintings, but I feel that there are already so many spaces where you can see that type of work. I wanted a space where contemporary jewellery, ceramics and textiles can be celebrated as the art forms they are.”
The new gallery will have curated monthly exhibitions, together with a collection of high end retail products. About half of all work at Platform comes from Blue Mountains artists, while the other half comes from artists across Australia.
“Platform provides a space for local artists, but also serves to introduce local audiences to some of the best artisan work from around the country. I am delighted with the collection, which I know will have something that appeals to everyone,” said Ms Heylen.
Platform’s first exhibition is a group show of 10 Blue Mountains artists, all responding to the theme of “launch”.
Platform Gallery is at Shop 12, 81-83 Katoomba St, Katoomba. Open Thursday to Monday, 10am-5pm.
