A new street library is opening at the former house of author Ethel Turner in Leura.
Filmmaker Heath Davis, director of award-winning film Broke and writer/director of upcoming comedy/drama Book Week, has teamed up with local artists and Dymocks to create a street library.
Fondly called “Ethel’s Library” by the makers, the idea is to create access to great stories for all to enjoy for free in an area where there is no library within walking distance.
Using the library is simple: Walk up to the little house full of books attached to the fence of 4 Balmoral Road, Leura, choose a book you would like to read and take it. When you are done reading, either return the book or donate a new one.
The library’s official launch party will be held on Friday, June 30 at 7pm at the Paragon Café in Katoomba. There will be live music, poetry reading and everyone is encouraged to bring a book to donate to the library. Tickets will be $10 at the door, with all money raised going towards the filming (in the Mountains) of Book Week.
