Blue Mountains mothers-to-be now have the opportunity to be part of a worldwide grassroots movement to make birth a positive experience.
The Blue Mountains Positive Birth Movement group will meet on July 1 at Glenbrook Yoga Space.
Group facilitator Rebecca Goosen said “we really want to provide the space for women to discuss what choices they have to make birth as positive as they possibly can – no matter what type of birth they have”.
“Often it’s only when labour has been less than positive that mothers realise there are lots of decisions that they can make beforehand so they feel empowered through their birth experience. We want local mums to be able to approach their labour with confidence,” she said.
The local chapter of the Positive Birth Movement was formed recently and meets regularly to discuss topics such as the birth environment, the ‘hour of power’ and birth plans. The event is sponsored by the local yoga studio, which provides the venue.
The idea started in the UK with founder Milli Hill, inviting pregnant mothers to her house for an informal chat over tea and cake and has since grown to have groups meeting all around the world, linked up by social media.
“We are looking for pregnant mothers, mothers that have recently given birth, birth partners, or anyone else that has experience of a birth they are proud of to join the group,” said Ms Goosen.
“There is so much wisdom out there in the community, we really want to tap into that and support mothers that are approaching childbirth. The best thing is the meet-ups are free to attend and tea is always flowing.”
