The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah has gone bulb-mad for its 30th birthday with an incredible 20,920 new bulbs planted in anticipation of one the garden’s biggest floral displays ever.
Heralding the welcome arrival of spring, the annual Daffodil Festival from August 19-29 returns to transform the garden into a sea of golden hues as thousands of daffodil bulbs erupt in bloom.
Backing onto the magnificent daffodil display in September and October will be an explosion of vibrant colour with 17,000 new bulbs including muscari (4,818); tulips (4,181); Dutch iris (2,640), crocus (1,938), ranunculus (3,520) and more than 2000 unusual other bulb varieties.
“We couldn’t have a 30th Birthday year for the garden without paying tribute to the history of the site, once a fresh-cut flower farm owned by the Brunet family from 1934-1972 – bulbs and cool climate plants were their specialty,” said a garden spokeswoman.
“This year, we have more than 50 new daffodil cultivars across the Residence Garden, Brunet Lawn and Woodland areas adding to the 100 already on display, and you will be able to spot a few rare species throughout the rock garden
“The Formal Garden is going to be truly spectacular for spring, with all of your favourite bulbs on show in whites, pinks, blues, yellows and more. This is all framed by a vast collection of new deciduous azaleas and lilacs, some of which are not displayed anywhere else in Australia. Bring the bring the kids to take it all in and capture some incredible photos.”
The Daffodil Festival and spring bulb display are free to attend and accompanied by an array of fun bookable activities, including a Discovery Walk and a growing bulbs workshop. Families can also reserve a picnic spot to spend an afternoon among the flowers.
