The spirit of Lord Carrington – and his distinctive handlebar moustache – is living on in a new business venture in the landmark hotel that bears his name.
Katoomba resident Max Steel opened a barbershop, Lord Carrington’s Parlour, in the hotel last week. And it’s hard not to notice the similarities between the 27-year-old barber and former NSW Governor’s facial hair.
“Lord Carrington did rock a mo and mine’s been off and on my face for the last three or so years,” said Mr Steel. “Perhaps he [Lord Carrington] was a hipster, maybe he was just a trendsetter far beyond his years… Either way, my mo will stick around for a fair while I reckon!”
Mr Steel worked at Euphoria Hair in Leura for five years before branching out on his own.
“The response so far has been fantastic,” he said. “The Carrington Hotel staff have made it a breeze to come in, set up and start snipping.”
The barbershop is located upstairs in the hotel near the existing hair salon, Hairitage.
“It's a phenomenal setting with views out and over the Jamison Valley. It really is something special,” said Mr Steel.
Lord Carrington’s Parlour offers a wide range of barber services from beard trims to full face shaves, head shaves and haircuts for all ages and genders.
A true local, Mr Steel grew up in Springwood and Faulconbridge and went to Ellison Public School and Blue Mountains Grammar School.
“I've travelled quite substantially and consider myself lucky to have seen so many places around the world. But honestly there's no where else like these Mountains. I'm pretty proud to call them home,” he said.
