School assembly is a small affair at Megalong Public School. Total enrolment is 10, plus two teachers’ aids, principal Miriam Treton and part-time teacher Stephanie Scott.
Despite its size, Megalong Public has been around for 125 years, an anniversary it is celebrating with a back-to-school day on Saturday, September 2.
Mrs Treton sees many positives in teaching her small band of pupils. Everyone joins in each class with different expectations depending on their ages and abilities.
“We learn the same topics but we differentiate it so there’s different levels within the same topics,” she said.
P&C president, Karen Carlon, said the school nearly closed in 1988 when student numbers dropped to six, but enrolments crept back up and its future was secured.
She was hoping past pupils and their families would come back to the school on September 2 for the birthday celebrations. The party starts at 11am with official speeches at 2pm.
There will be commemorative items for sale, raffles and memorabilia. The current students will sing and perform some bush dances.
Refreshments and a BBQ lunch will be provided. RSVP to megalong125@gmail.com for catering purposes.
