If hiking isn’t really your thing, why not join the trivia equivalent of Trekking for Timor at The Quiz for Timor in Katoomba on Saturday, September 16.
Blue Mountains Library and Blue Mountains East Timor Sisters (BMETS) present an evening of fun, food and literary-related trivia in support of the excellent work of the BMETS group.
“Blue Mountains City Council supports the work of Blue Mountains community organisations which are fundraising and developing community projects. Education is valued greatly in East Timor but when a family is poor, girls and women still miss out,” said Blue Mountains mayor, Mark Greenhill.
“While poverty rates are reducing in Timor, 42 per cent of the population is still living below the poverty line and only 63 per cent of women are literate compared to 71 per cent of men.”
All funds raised will go to provide educational scholarships for girls and women in East Timor. The scholarships, provided by BMETS, will allow young women to complete high school and tertiary study so they can support their growing country as teachers, medicos, and members of government.
Previous recipients of BMETS scholarships have gone on to support their communities through a wide range of work, including organising international events, working for Timorese Women’s NGO’s, working in the Timorese Police Force Victim’s Protection Unit and for the Ministry of Tourism.
Be sure to come with your thinking caps on and join in the fun for a great cause and come hungry as there will be free nibbles plus homemade soups and finger food for sale courtesy of the excellent cooks and caterers at BMETS.
All are welcome to this event and tickets are $20 per person, children under 12 are free. Get a table together (maximum eight people) or register as an individual. The event will be held at the Katoomba Community Centre (the old Katoomba Library) from 6pm for 6.30pm start. Please note this is an alcohol-free event.
