Leura Mall: A total of 18 CCTV cameras will be installed along the strip and in nearby streets.

A recent crime where shots were fired into a shop front in Leura had reinforced the town’s need for CCTV cameras, according to the vice-president of the Leura Village Association (LVA).

Piercarlo Cuneo said the incident in July when numerous shots were fired into the window of Inner Space furniture “proves that nowadays no village or town is safe”.

“The CCTV cameras will help to make our historic village more secure for the residents and the tourists visiting Leura,” he said.

The LVA received $120,000 funding from the federal government for the installation of 18 cameras along the Mall and adjacent streets.

Mr Cuneo thanked the government which made the grant from its Safer Communities Fund.

The installation will begin at the end of this month and should be completed within three weeks, Mr Cuneo said.

A 34-year-old man was arrested for the shooting and is before the courts. The owner of Inner Space furniture, Graham Gawne, said he had never heard of the man and believed it was a random shooting.
