In 2015 Lawrence Thomas cycled in a relay across Australia to not only physically challenge himself but also raise awareness about an issue that affects half of Australians – mental health.
This year the Winmalee resident is cycling with a group of more than 60 riders spending eight days in the saddle cycling from Perth to Broome from September 16.
“Australia’s suicide rate is the highest it’s been in 10 years,” said Mr Thomas.
“With over 3000 individuals taking their own lives in 2015, it’s still the main cause of death amongst Australians aged between 15 and 44.
“I have friends affected by mental illness. It’s a disease that quietly eats away at our loved ones and often leads to tragedy. The pain that I will suffer on my journey pales in comparison to the pain that so many individuals suffer trying to cope with mental illness.”
TourXOz is a not-for-profit organisation that encourages cyclists to challenge themselves physically and mentally by riding relay across Australia while raising awareness about mental health and well-needed funds for the Black Dog Institute, a research institute that researches, diagnoses and treats mood disorders and depression. In 2017 the group will be joined by former AFL legend and Australian of the Year Adam Goodes and SBS cycling commentator Mike Tomalaris.
