Blue Mountains City Council has approved a lease which should ultimately lead to a new telecommunications tower being built on Hat Hill Road in Blackheath, in a bid to improve phone coverage in the Upper Mountains.
Catalyst One Resources approached council on behalf of Optus Communications who want to build a 31 metre telecommunications tower on council-owned land at 274-318 Hat Hill Road, a former airfield.
Councillors were told there were social and economic benefits to the development – increased network coverage and rental income for council. It was passed unanimously.
The revenue from the site will go into council’s Property Investment Fund and Optus will also pay a $10,000 bond to ensure all proposed works are completed and the site remediated to council’s satisfaction.
The company will still need to put in a development application and the community can then comment on the matter.
