About 110 locals turned up to get behind 13-year old Joel Hart and his family on Saturday November 4 at Escarpments Estate (formerly Katoomba Golf Club).
Joel of Wentworth Falls has muscular dystrophy, which means he needs a powered wheelchair and a customised car to transport it, to get around comfortably. His mother Bel is suffering from multiple sclerosis.
Organised through the Rotary Club of Upper Blue Mountains, who had already raised $32,000, a further $9,000 was raised on the night which will now go to purchasing a Kia Carnivale from Penrith City Auto. The car will provide more mobility for the family and transport Joel and his electric wheelchair.
“It was an emotional, moving, but fun night and made us proud to see this result,” Rotary spokesman Bill Pixton said.
The fundraiser preceded the official opening of Escarpments Estate a week later.
