Ronald Hooper joined Cancer Wellness Support as a volunteer at the North Katoomba op shop in 2011.
Mr Hooper had recently retired from full time work in antiques. He initially juggled part-time work and volunteering, requiring an early start, (working on jewellery displays) then coming to the op-shop for another couple of hours twice a week.
Mr Hooper is thrilled that he is able to continue working with antiques sharing his passion with like-minded shoppers, and meeting new people.
“It’s so nice to come here and volunteer it’s great to get out of the house and do something. I feel like I am contributing. Working here is really good. No responsibility for the running of the place. When you are doing what you love it’s not a problem.”
Cancer Wellness Support (formerly Blue Mountains Cancer Help) offers cancer clients and their families innovative, integrated and holistic therapies and education, including massage, acupuncture, lymphoedema management, yoga, reflexology, counselling, meditation and art therapy.
Its op shops at Katoomba and Penrith provide valuable funds for the organisation’s work.
Others have found volunteering rewarding, such as Damien, who said: “The best thing is the co-workers and it’s a good cause.”
Anyone interested in volunteering should email Trish Donoghue, the volunteer co-ordinator, and let her know a little about yourself. Her email is volunteering@cancersupport.org.au.
