The Rotary Club of Springwood is set to give the bushfire ravaged community of Tathra on the state’s far south coast a leg up with a fundraising bushfire event scheduled for next month.
President Norm Kitto said the Rotary Clubs of Australia opened their hearts to the Blue Mountains, and especially the Winmalee community, during the 2013 bushfires and it was their “small way of giving back”.
“Rotary clubs around Australia donated just short of $400,000 to our Bushfire Relief which we were able to give out to every family who needed it. We got so much that the extra went towards the exercise equipment park at Winmalee.”
Mr Kitto said 206 payments were made totaling $267,000 to families directly affected by total or partial loss, money left over went to the community exercise park [$46,000], new equipment for the Yellow Rock Rural Fire Service and Emma Parade Community Fire Unit [$42,000] and the Blackheath/Mt Victoria victims received $15,000 distributed through Blackheath Rotary Club.
Mr Kitto said “no-one that contacted us missed out”.
“We thought we could do the same for Tathra. We know what they are going through. We will be giving the money to a Rotary club down the far south coast.”
“We want to invite the entire community to come along for a country evening and dance the night away and also support Tathra at this terrible time.
Proceeds will be shared between Tathra Bushfire Relief and the original proposed recipient of the event – Ronald McDonald House Westmead.
The bushdance for Tathra will be held at Winmalee High School on High School Drive on Saturday April 14 from 7pm to 11.30pm. Cost is $30 a ticket, $50 a couple. The Bell Bird Bush Band will be the entertainment for the evening and have a dance caller present.
Tickets are being sold through the Winmalee Garden Centre, 216 Hawkesbury Road. The centre is open from 9am to 5pm Wednesday to Monday or phone 47542519.
