A five-year wildlife protection area trial at Bonnie Doon in Katoomba and Sassafras Gully in Springwood has revealed no significant increase in native animal activity.
Signs indicating dogs were prohibited at Bonnie Doon and only allowed on-leash at Sassafras Gully were ignored by dog owners, according to a council report.
The report on the trial concluded that further unbudgeted funding to monitor and regulate compliance, educate the community about responsible pet ownership and the introduction of pest control programs targeted at foxes and feral cats was necessary.
The council will continue to investigate the feasibility of implementing effective wildlife protection areas within existing resources.
Ward one councillor Kerry Brown said "I'm glad we are looking at more ranger checks on dogs off-leash."
"Taking your dog off-leash in areas 'cause you think he or she is under control is very distressing to animals," she said.
Independent councillor Shae Foenander said people need to take more responsibility for their dogs, and suggested giving dog owners a pamphlet on responsible pet ownership when they register their dog with council.
