Springwood Bowling Club

Novice champion Michael Evans’s name will now appear on ‘The Wood’ trophy - a mounted Lignum Vitae bowl surrounded by the names of some excellent bowlers who got their start at Springwood. Among them Neil Baudinet, Glenn Perrin, Shirl Nelson, Jim Campbell John Auton but sadly not mine. A discussion of the trophy among the Four Wise Men - Mick, Ian, Bob and Peter - led to the realisation that the term ‘Wood’ is still part of Bowls parlance today, as in ‘What’s the best back wood?’ or ‘That’s number 1 wood’. Also, Scoop who once managed 14/100 in a Latin test tells me that Lignum Vitae means ‘Wood of Life’ but I would check it if I were you as he doesn’t seem to have very impressive credentials.
Hey! what’s the big.. I say … what’s the big idea Selectors? You’ve always got me up against Trish Coop and even though she’s a one-time bowling partner of mine she never shows me any mercy. Cut it out! In a terrific Social match on Tuesday involving Ella Walters, Georgina McBeath, Trish Coop, Kate Koutsoukos, Pat Dawes and Yours Truly all the ladies showed great skill. There’s some real talent there. No wonder the Springwood ladies achieve great success on a Zone and District scale. Hope a bit rubs off on me.
In a game of the highest quality Harry Patfield won the Open Singles Championship on Sunday morning defeating Karen Coleman 31-23. Both players are relatively new to Bowls with Karen only starting 18 months ago. They both had to endure gruelling qualifying rounds and semi-finals yesterday to qualify. Immense credit to both. The tournament was a feather in the cap of the organising committee and the players. Flurr was very impressive doing the important Marker's job and Bridget, looking resplendent in pink uniform was umpire.
A fitting conclusion to a wonderful weekend of Bowls.
Sorry Bob Thomas. You can’t get your name in the paper just because the team that beat your team won the money. Good try Bob.
Happy Birthday Ken Hughes, a Brum from way back, who turned 88 on Sunday. Go Villa.
