Well-known Aboriginal artist Bundeluk died suddenly on Sunday, June 8.
Bundeluk (Ian Watson) was a familiar figure in the Springwood and Leura town centres where he sold his art works on the street.
While many people owned prints of his paintings on t-shirts or jumpers, his art works had also been displayed in the Powerhouse Museum and commissioned for prominent public places.
Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill said he would ask the council to recognise Bundeluk's life "in an appropriate and public way".
"I was shocked and deeply, deeply saddened to hear of Bundeluk's passing over the weekend," he said.
"He was a friend of mine. Only a few days ago we had a chat and my last memory of him is him making me laugh. He was one of those local characters that was much loved. He will be sadly missed."
Bundeluk lived in Bullaburra. He was 53-years-old.
On Tuesday, tributes were already appearing outside the Westpac Bank in Springwood.
Bundeluk's funeral will be held at Castlebrook Memorial Park, Windsor Road, Rouse Hill at 2pm on Monday, June 16. All welcome.
