Teen swimming sensation Matt Wilson will represent Australia at the World Championships in Hungary in July, after some lightning fast swims at the Australian Swimming Championships in Brisbane last week.
Wilson, who recently moved from Springwood to Sydney for university, won the 200m breaststroke in 2:09:29 – a PB – and set an Australian age record.
“I was so relieved to get the QT [qualifying time] in the 200 breast after missing two senior teams last year by the smallest of margins,” the 18-year-old said.
“I was very happy with that swim and I'm really excited to get back into a training block for Worlds and work on improving even further.”
Wilson said he was excited to have made the Senior Dolphins team for his first big international competition.
“I can't wait to get overseas and begin the preparations leading into the event. I've represented Australia since 2013 on junior teams and I'm always extremely proud to wear the green and gold but this will be extra special this time,” he said.
Wilson is studying part-time a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at the Australian Catholic University, so he can dedicate more time to training.
He will also compete in the 100m and 50m breaststroke in the world championships.
Wilson snared silver in the 100m breaststroke at the Australian Championships in 1:00:54 behind Daniel Cave in 1:00:45. He was also third in the 50m breaststroke in 27.91.
