After a successful self-defence course for young women at Katoomba High School in 2016, the Blue Mountains Women’s Health and Resource Centre is set to do it again.
Offering the course shortly after the school day finished was one of the success factors last time, said Sarala Porter, course instructor.
Ms Porter, who has a black-belt in Aikido, has been teaching women’s self-defence for more than 17 years.
“Self-defence teaches you how to recognise situations that may put you at risk. You don’t need to be physically strong or aggressive to learn basic self defence,” she said.
“Furthermore it is a particularly useful skill for young women to have as they become more socially active. We are also hoping that all women, whether they have a daughter at the school or not, as well as young women who may attend other schools or who have left school altogether, will also take the opportunity to attend this group. As long as you are 12 years or older and female you are welcome.”
This six-week group is a partnership between the Blue Mountains Women’s Health and Resource Centre, the Mountains Outreach Community Service and Katoomba High School. It begins Tuesday, October 24 from 3.45– 5.15pm. Cost is $60 for the course or $45 if more than one family member attends or if participants are under 25. Bookings are essential. Phone 4782 5133.
