They enjoy some of the best views in the Blue Mountains and soon Boofhead and Olive Oyl at the Leuralla Ampitheatre in Leura will have a new neighbour.
The cartoon character sculptures opposite the Leuralla Toy and Railway Museum in Olympian Parade will have a new addition by Christmas – but its identity is tightly under wraps until then.
“It’s a surprise sculpture,” said museum director Elizabeth Evatt. She has invited the public to guess the identity of the new figure, with the winner receiving free tickets to the museum.
Ms Evatt, who with her husband Clive Evatt, are co-directors of the museum, said the sculptures “are a response to the Australian public’s fascination with cartoon characters”.
It is a passion that has links to Clive Evatt’s Hogarth Galleries in Paddington.
“The work of many of the well known artists who exhibited at Hogarth Galleries, like Martin Sharp, Peter Kingston and Garry Shead, is very much driven by this fascination with comic book characters,” said Ms Evatt.
“Rather than put up stuffy old kings on horseback in bronze, Clive’s attitude is that Australians respond very well to this form of cultural art.”
The base for the new sculpture is already in place but there are few clues to its identity. What do you think?
