A program in Blaxland teaching kids a second language is giving children a chance to get a head start in life.
On Saturday a trial class was held in Blaxland to introduce kids to Mandarin.
In the 2016 Census, Mandarin was recorded as the second most commonly spoken language in Australia after English.
Speaking a second language is thought to give kids today an advantage in the increasingly global and competitive job market.
Mandarin Stars, a language program for children aged from one to 12 years, has been created by experienced educators and bilingual teaching staff.
It features immersion in the Mandarin language to develop confidence and familiarity. As part of the program for preschoolers, children participate in a structured playgroup environment with music, movement, singing, dramatic play, art and craft and storytelling games, all in Mandarin.
In the toddler classes, teachers speak Mandarin the majority of the time, and as the kids get older, introducing more complex concepts and fluidity between languages.
Business owner of the Penrith Mandarin Stars franchise, Michelle Wang said: “I love teaching children and love to see them learn; the creativity, honesty and endless energy means I consistently love my job.”
Classes are held on Saturday mornings at the Blaxland Community Centre. More info at: www.mandarinstars.com.au.
