Roads and Maritime Services has opened tenders for the Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Mount Victoria.
A spokesperson said the project is funded as part of the federal and state governments’ $250 million Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow to improve safety for road users.
“Along with providing road users with a better travel experience, this upgrade will improve safety and boost efficiency for motorists travelling along this busy stretch of highway,” the spokesperson said.
“This work will improve safety between Medlow Bath and Blackheath, including the Blackheath town centre, by widening highway shoulders, providing dedicated turning lanes and realigning sections of the road to straighten bends.
“The upgrade also includes relocating utilities such as poles to safer locations, providing wider sealed road shoulders and installing new safety barriers.”
The spokesperson said the upgrade will improve traffic flow and road user safety at 13 intersections along the Great Western Highway at Blackheath.
“Improvements will be made to key intersections including the major intersection Govetts Leap Road and the Great Western Highway at Blackheath,” the spokesperson said.
“By making changes to a number of important intersections along this stretch of the highway, motorists will be able to enjoy a safer and smoother journey.”
The spokesperson said Roads and Maritime has asked suitably qualified and resourced contractors capable of delivering this complex civil project to submit tenders for the Great Western Highway upgrade project.
“Work associated with this tender includes earth work, shoulder widening, utility relocation, intersection upgrades, slope stabilisation and landscaping work,” the spokesperson said.
“A mandatory pre-tender meeting will be held in early March for all prospective tenderers to find out further information.”
Prospective tenderers are required to lodge tenders by 2.30pm on Wednesday, March 21 via the E-Tender website.
