Lost Bear Gallery presents its first major exhibition for 2018, featuring internationally acclaimed wildlife artist Paul Margocsy.
Known for his accurate yet playful depictions of birds and other wildlife, Melbourne-based Margocsy captures not only the anatomy of his subjects, but also their individual personalities. A sensorial approach to painting allows him to be biologically faithful whilst also compositionally adventurous, utilising his sense of humour as much as his artistic skill.
Margocsy’s paintings are recognisable by their airbrushed backgrounds, developed after painstaking experimentation. These lend a muted yet evocative backdrop to his avian subjects. A photographic memory permits him to capture each bird in his memory bank, drawing on it at will, and transforming it into an inspired composition, adjusting in his mind “the turn of a head here, the angle of a body there…to complete and complement the painting’s dramatic visual and emotional narrative”.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 24, 2-5pm and runs until March 19 at Lost Bear Gallery, 98 Lurline Street, Katoomba. Open daily 10am-5pm.
