It’s been many years in the making, but Springwood Swimming Club now have a dedicated club room within the Springwood Aquatic and Fitness Centre.
The room was officially opened by Blue Mountains MP Trish Doyle on Thursday, February 22.
“This is another worthy project that the club talked with me about before I was elected. It's great that council has partnered with the club and state government to make it happen,” Ms Doyle said.
Originally the space used to house the canteen, it cost $25,000 – a combination of state government and Blue Mountains City Council funding and club fundraising – to renovate the space which has been painted in the swimming club’s colours.
Since the canteen’s closure six months ago, drinks and snacks can be purchased from the centre’s reception.
Club president Garry Fletcher said they had a club room as part of the old swimming pool complex, and when the current aquatic centre was built 13 years ago they were promised a club room.
There was a proposal to build the club room near the deep end of the 25m pool. That plan was scrapped as the cladding was similar to that present in the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London, Mr Fletcher said.
“It’s been a long time coming, but it’s great to have the space,” Mr Fletcher said.
“We appreciate the efforts of council. They have been very accommodating.”
The club, which boasts 120 members, uses the room on Thursday nights and weekends. The room is available for use by others outside these times.
