Blue Mountains City Council looks set to backtrack on plans to rezone a Springwood park for possible development.
Ward 3 Cr Shae Foenander will move a rescission motion at the March 27 council meeting, reversing moves to rezone Rest Park in Macquarie Road.
The proposed reclassification from community land to operational land would have meant it could be developed for mixed use, including shop-top housing, retail and offices.
“While the park has become a site of some anti-social activity, it forms a vital green corridor between the town centre and bushland off Springwood Avenue and surrounds,” said Cr Foenander.
“We will need to spend resources to ensure the park is clean and useable but we must save it. This will be part of a package of reforms where we will reject pressures to increase density, building heights and the population of Springwood.
“Recent decisions of the council resist development pressures for urban sprawl into this important lower mountains township.”
Ward 3 Liberal Cr Daniel Myles, who described Rest Park as “an ugly park, to be frank” at the last council meeting, said he would support the rescission motion.
“A town as beautiful as Springwood needs very careful consideration before changes are made. The council will continue to consult with the community about the best way forward. As the appetite for change in Springwood appears to be very limited, I support Cr Foenander's rescission motion.”
