Two pedestrians have escaped with their lives after being hit by a P-plater whose car mounted a Sydney footpath after colliding with another vehicle.
The man and woman were walking along Lawson Street in Darlington after midday on Thursday when a car collided with the P-plater's Toyota Yaris, which then ended up on the footpath.
The woman, aged 20, suffered an injury to her right knee and was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition, NSW Police said. The man received minor injuries.
Ufuk Bozoglu, who owns a kebab store across the road, ran out to see what was happening after he heard a girl screaming.
"I thought it was much worse, the way she was screaming, I thought somebody had died," Mr Bozoglu told reporters.
"I ran over and the man had a cut in the lower leg and the woman on the upper leg. It was horrible."
Leonards Advertising co-owner Richard Faithorn was walking to work when he heard a noise he said sounded like building works.
"Then (I heard) the screams," Mr Faithorn told reporters.
"I only saw two people injured and the lady in the car sitting in the driver's seat."
Mr Faithhorn dialled triple zero and bystanders tended to the two people who had been hit by the car.
The drivers involved - a 22-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man - were both breath-tested at the scene and returned negative results.
Barista Arya Baskara, who works at a local cafe, was washing dishes when he heard a loud bang followed by screaming.
"I was scared because the lady was screaming and everyone was gathering over there," he told AAP on Thursday.
NSW Police said "the incident is not being treated as a deliberate act" and they've called for witnesses to come forward.
