George Gershwin’s musical comedy, Crazy for You, is coming to Penrith and is one of the largest musical performances to come to Penrith in years.
Premiering on Friday June 8 and performed over two weekends, this entertaining musical features more than 80 students on stage plus a full orchestra.
The dynamism of the performers combined Gershwin’s feel-good music will transport you straight onto Broadway.
“Crazy for You was our Number 1 choice,” St Paul’s Grammar School Principal, Ian Wake said.
“It’s a St Paul’s Grammar School – Crazy for You dynamic blend of music and dancing, and laughter and sentiment, all delivered with incredible showmanship.
“It provides us with the chance to showcase a strong lead female and two strong lead men, and a cast of over 80 plus the orchestra meant we could give a large number of students the opportunity to be part of something big.”
Unlike a lot of musicals where the focus is very much on the music, it’s the dance that drives the narrative in Crazy for You.
Set in both New York and outwest USA in the 1930s, ‘Follies Girls’ – stereotyped as the ditzy blondes with platinum blonde hair – tap and high-kick their way through the production.
The cowboys – a bunch of rundown locals with latent musical talent – combine athleticism with humour to deliver a fast-paced and light-hearted production.
Throughout are Gershwin tunes that span generations, from the high-energy Slap that Bass to the romantic Someone to Watch Over Me.
With an accessible storyline and non-stop movement, the musical entrances everyone from 5 to 105.
“We’ve engaged sound and lighting technicians to mentor the students,” said Mr Wake.
“We also have a number of music professionals in the orchestra who add that extra level of complexity to what’s a very inspiring soundtrack.
“This production really showcases the level of sophistication in our performance culture.
“St Paul’s is very much about engaging the community, and Crazy for You really will uplift and delight.”
