A stalwart of Mt Wilson, Libby Raines, died peacefully in Lithgow Hospital last month.
Mrs Raines was a long-time resident of Mt Wilson, an active member of the Blue Mountains Bushcare Network and of Mt Wilson Progress Association.
She was a passionate advocate of The Mounts, holding various position on the progress association over many years.
The mayor, Mark Greenhill, paid tribute to her at last week’s council meeting.
“Libby had for decades been a very positive advocate for natural values of Mt Wilson and surrounding areas, particularly in regards to the importance of weed management in protecting the bushland of Mt Wilson,” he said.
Mrs Raines had a long involvement in council’s bushcare program and co-founded the local bushcare group in 1999. She was a recipient of the Bushcare Legend, the highest award in the program, in recognition of her contribution and achievements.
The mayor said: “Her good natured and persuasive approach had always been one that has brought members of the community as well as members of council’s bushland management team to support her vision for the protection and restoration of bushland across the Mounts.
“Our staff have fond memories of the beautifully hand-written letters and cards sent by Mrs Raines.”
Mrs Raines’ own property, Merry Garth, was a magnificent garden with spectacular views. It was open to visitors virtually year-round and many called in not only to see the spring flowers and autumn colours but also to buy some of the plants she successfully propagated.
She was also a successful artist, exhibiting locally and making hand-painted cards which she donated for a variety of causes, including at the Blackheath Rhododendron Gardens.
Mrs Raines’ funeral was held at the Anglican Church of St George in Mt Wilson and was attended by more than 300 people, testifying to her popularity in the area.
She is survived by husband Keith, children and spouses Peter and Linda, Robert and Tina, and Beth, grandchildren Pip, Molly, Bill and Jack, as well as sisters Marianne and Cecily and sister-in-law Betty.
