Hazelbrook streets prone to extreme flooding will be protected thanks to a joint project between the state government and council.
Blue Mountains Council has received $29,300 from the state government and will contribute $15,000 of its own funds towards the project in Luchetti Avenue, Hazelbrook.
The project will help control overland water flow from Luchetti Avenue which potentially threatens a number of nearby properties. To ensure a safe way out from Luchetti Avenue, Scullin Court and Lyons Place, the project will redirect the overland flow path to the natural creek line. The kerb height in front of flood-affected houses will also be raised.
“The funding is a long-term investment to support councils, and other government bodies who have the primary role of managing flood risk in their communities,” said Upper House MP Shayne Mallard.
“The grants assist with flood studies, flood risk management studies and plans and the implementation of works to reduce flood risk.”
Ward 2 Cr Romola Hollywood, who is the chair of council’s floodplain risk management committee, welcomed the funding.
“This project will improve public safety on Hazelbrook streets which could be flooded in extreme weather events. The Luchetti Avenue project was identified as a flood mitigation solution in the recently adopted Hazelbrook and Woodford Creeks Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan,” she said.
