Blackheath’s community op shop has a trained technician who can test and tag all electrical equipment that is donated, checking it is in good working order before it goes on the shelves.
But Michael Thompson lacks one key ingredient – the testing machine.
By law, all electrical goods need to be checked before sale to ensure no earth leakages, proper insulation and that the goods are safe to use.
“It applies to anything electrical,” Mr Thompson said, “from women’s curling tongs to an eight-bar heater.”
He said the op shop has a “roomful” of donated electrical goods which can’t be sold unless they are tagged.
The op shop volunteer, who also sells The Big Issue outside the local supermarket, is hoping local businesses or individuals might chip in to help cover the $890 cost of the machine.
Mr Thompson can be contacted on mikedilaram@yahoo.com.au or call in to the op shop at 134 Station St, Blackheath from 10am Wednesday to Sunday.
