Drama, romance and intrigue come to the Joan, as the Penrith Symphony Orchestra present the audience favourite Opera Gala Concert on July 28.
Delight in the energy and wit of favourite excerpts from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and the passion and spectacle of Verdi and Puccini.
Musical theatre is well represented, with the romanticism of Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. There’s even something from The Sound of Music to complete this varied and deliciously eclectic program.
Dynamic young soloists Joshua Oxley and Anna McDougall join the orchestra for this performance of opera classics and Broadway highlights.
McDougall completed her Masters of Music in Opera Performance at Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2014. She has been featured in operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, and in Bizet’s Carmen with Opera New England. Limelight Magazine praised her performance in The Old Maid and the Thief, referring to her as a singer “to watch out for”, and her voice as “spot on, evenly produced across the range”.
Joshua Oxley is an exciting young tenor based in Sydney. His operatic roles include Tamino, in Mozart’s Magic Flute, Alfredo in La Traviata by Verdi, and Remendado in Carmen. On the musical theatre stage, Oxley has appeared with Chatswood Musical Society in The Pirates of Penzance.
PSO has led the way in bringing opera to audiences in western Sydney, with annual gala concerts and staged operatic productions a feature of every season since 2012. In 2015 the orchestra collaborated with Opera Australia for a gala performance in Parramatta Park.
This exciting tradition continues with this concert of captivating musical moments in opera and musical theatre. Artistic director and chief conductor, Paul Terracini, said: “It’s great to be supporting young talent.”
The performance begins at 8pm on Saturday, July 28, at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith. There is also a free pre-concert talk by the conductor at 7.20pm.
